Gen Blue

Watch Blue Valentine Movie 2010 Review Online

Blue Valentine has beautiful cinematography, an incredible script and is a devastatingly realistic depiction at how easily a relationship can go wrong, simply because it went wrong. If this film doesn’t get to you, you don’t have a soul. It’s a must-see.There is a moment during Blue Valentine – during the end credits, in fact, as plinky indie music played and photographs of the characters were momentarily illuminated by fireworks – when it struck me that the film is, effectively, Revolutionary Road for the Tumblr generation.

Scored by Grizzly Bear, shot in Brooklyn on shaky hand-held camera, and detailing the idyllic beginning and suffocating end of a relationship of two outrageously good looking people, the film provides a welcome counterpoint to the chintzy (500) Days Of Summer as a Gen Y exercise in tracing what happens when love evaporates.

Concerning the romantic life of Dean (Ryan Gosling) and Cindy (Michelle Williams), the film skips back and forth between the present day unravelling of the pair’s relationship (married, with a sweet daughter, and a missing dog) and its first embraces some five or six years earlier.

The couple’s interactions are strained and exquisitely painful to watch. On a rare romantic trip to an ‘adult’ hotel where their room is decked out a la “The Future” (silver walls and “No windows”, as Cindy notes, a low hint of panic in her voice), Dean hops in the shower with his wife.

Williams’ performance in that brief moment is a work of subtle wonder: her eyes stay jammed shut as she wipes imaginary soap and water out of her eyes with obsessive repetition, as if to signal her complete lack of attraction to the man she is married to.

In the present day scenes, both actors embody weathered, tired versions of themselves; Gosling’s hair is receding and he hides behind irritating aviator shades, while Williams’ face is blown and harried. (Apparently the pair “raced” each other to put on weight for the filming.)

This contrasts beautifully with the scenes of their courtship, Williams a vision in casual university chic (she is planning to study medicine) and Gosling so handsome it could be a government conspiracy.

Stevie Wonder was in the middle of a multi-album roll when he put out this funk and soul collection, clunky title and all, in 1974. As usual, he adds depth and unexpected touches to even the most straightforward love song–the moving piano ballad “Too Shy to Say” has a spooky feeling, as if “I want to fly away with you, until there’s nothing more to do” is the saddest line he ever sang. The harder…
